Glastullich and Cadubh are ideal for families and friends looking for a Highland holiday with an atmosphere recalling the simple pleasures of times past. At Rhidorroch, the ancient landscape which forms the glen remains unchanged and unspoiled, then add to that the soft glow from the gas lamps which light Glastullich and Cadubh and you need little imagination to return to the romantic Highlands of the 19th century.

That said, while the cottages certainly retain their original charm, they have been modernised to satisfy 21st century expectations of comfort and warmth. In addition, to make the most of the long long daylight hours, both cottages have large, south-facing windows to catch the sun and give you full benefit of the magnificent views up and down the glen. And at this latitude (similar to that of Gothenburg) summer visitors have the added bonus of long, long daylight hours.

Glastullich cottage

Glastullich is a traditional, stone built cottage set against a low hill with beautiful views into Glen Achall to the south, east and west. The cottage stands within a fenced garden area. The grassy hillsides around Glastullich are a favourite grazing area for deer, bird life is abundant and Loch Achall is close enough to catch trout for breakfast.

Only two-and-a-half miles from Ullapool along the quiet estate road, the cottage itself is reached via a 400-yard track – good surface but untarred.

Glastullich accommodation

Sun porch with dining area overlooks the loch to the south and east and west up and down the glen
Sitting room lovely views from this comfortable south-facing room; gas lighting
Kitchen Cooker and fridge are both Calor Gas. Because the cottage does not have electricity we cannot provide a washing machine but the laundrette in Ullapool provides a same-day washing and/or a drying only service
Double bedroom windows to the south and east give lovely morning and day-long light
Twin bedroom south and west-facing windows
Bathroom the large, deep bath invites a long, relaxing soak after a day on loch or hill
Upstairs two single bedrooms each with coomb ceilings and velux windows to clear, starry skies

The cottage does not have electricity: heating, lighting, cooking and fridge are by Calor Gas
Car parking is within a fenced area

Cadubh cottage
sleeps 6
self catering; dogs welcome

Cadubh cottage
Cadubh cottage
Cadubh lies gloriously remote, deep in the very heart of Glen Achall and, while still only six miles from Ullapool down the private estate road (the last two miles are untarred), this cottage is fabulously well away from it all.

Looking east from Cadubh cliffs rise steeply from the floor of the glen, to the north are grand views of the hills – the main province of the red and sika deer herds – and just outside the fenced, south-facing garden area in front of the cottage, the Rhidorroch River flows west towards the head of Loch Achall. Silver birch and rowan trees grow along the river bank here – a lovely spot for picnics and bird watching. This far up the glen the deer and sheep are more inclined to come close to the cottage garden and, despite the fence, can sometimes get in.

Cadubh accommodation

Sun porch with dining area: glorious views west to Loch Achall and east up the glen to the cliffs
Sitting room opens off the sun porch and the south-facing windows overlook the river
Kitchen Cooker and fridge are both Calor Gas. Because the cottage does not have electricity we cannot provide a washing machine but the laundrette in Ullapool provides a same-day washing and/or a drying only service
Bathroom the large, deep bath invites a long, relaxing soak after a day on loch or hill
Double bedroom bright, south-facing room
Upstairs a little flight of backstairs leads to two south-facing single bedrooms; a twin bedroom with velux window leads off one of the single rooms

The cottage does not have electricity: heating, lighting, cooking and fridge are by Calor Gas
Car parking is just outside a fenced area

Rhidorroch Estate Map
Rhidorroch holiday cottages offer peace, tranquillity and traditional highland charm. The stone-built cottages both stand within Glen Achall: Glastullich lies two-and-a-half miles from Ullapool, Cadubh is six miles from Ullapool. The properties are reached via the estate's private road which runs for eight miles from the foot of the glen on the outskirts of the village, follows the course of the River Ullapool, skirts the shores of Loch Achall then continues eastwards deep into the glen. The cottages are wonderful places from which to appreciate the clear air, wide open spaces and the dramatic quality of light and rich colours unique to the north-west of Scotland.

The hills, lochs and rivers within the estate open up a wealth of different ways to spend your days: from cycling or running on the quiet estate road through the glen and walking in the hills, to enjoying picnics on the riverbank or a barbecue by the lochside. And even around the cottage gardens and by the roadside, you are likely to see red and sika deer, birds of prey, wild flowers and orchids and the estate's Highland cattle and sheep.

Fishermen staying at the cottages are welcome to bank fish, and can also hire a boat on Loch Achall for the day or book a rod on the Lower beat of the Ullapool River.

In Ullapool, on the shores of Loch Broom, it's fun to watch the fishing boats land their creel-caught lobsters and prawns at the pier and, over and above its charming setting, the village offers many other attractions such as boat trips, seafront shops, restaurants and bars, a leisure centre with indoor swimming pool, and Ullapool golf course. Close to estate and the village are many hill, forest and coast walks, pebble beaches, Leckmelm Gardens and artists' studios open to visitors.

Rhidorroch is well placed for day trips to, for example, fabulous pure white sand beaches such as Achnahaird, Oldshoremore, Balnakeil and remote Sandwood Bay, or visit the magnificent gardens at Inverewe or, perhaps, make the short ferry crossing to see the thousands of nesting birds on Handa Island.
